Location: Akron, OH

Akron, known fondly as the Rubber City, was founded in 1825 on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. Historically, Akron has been a center for manufacturing, serving as the home for companies such as Goodyear, B. F. Goodrich, and Firestone. It is also the birthplace of Alcoholics Anonymous, the site of the oldest airship facility in the world, the site of Sojourner Truth’s “Ain’t I a Woman” speech, and home of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Today, Akron is home to roughly 189,000 people. It is located approximately 40 minutes south of Cleveland, Ohio and is midway between Chicago and New York. 

The University of Akron (UA)

Founded in 1870, The University of Akron is a public research university with 13,900 students from 46 US states and 71 foreign countries. UA offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate programs. The main campus is located in the city of Akron, with four additional branch campuses. The University is home to the Drs. Nicholas and Dorothy Cummings Center for the History of Psychology (CCHP), established in 1965. The CCHP includes the Archives of the History of American Psychology, the National Museum of Psychology, and the Institute for Human Science and Culture

Transportation

Airports

Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) offers nonstop flights to 17 domestic destinations, plus global access aboard six major carriers. It is a short 20 minute drive to The University of Akron campus. Visit http://www.akroncantonairport.com/ for further information on car rentals, shuttles, and taxis. N.B.: There is no easy public transportation from CAK to Akron. The CCHP will set up a Google Spreadsheet to facilitate airport carpooling. 

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) is the largest commercial airport in Northeast Ohio, serving almost 12 million passengers annually. It is a 45 minute drive to The University of Akron campus. Visit http://www.clevelandairport.com/ for further information on car rentals, shuttles, and taxis. N.B.: There is no easy public transportation from CLE to Akron. The CCHP will set up a Google Spreadsheet to facilitate airport carpooling.  

Housing

On-Campus Housing

The UA Honors Residence Hall is a modern, six-story building with elevator and air-conditioning featuring single and double occupancy rooms. Rooms are available beginning Wednesday, June 12 through Sunday, June 18, 2024. 

On-campus housing is a 5-minute walk from conference facilities at the CCHP. The walk takes you along a relatively flat sidewalk. It is a 1 to 3-minute drive depending on where you park. 

2024 Rates: 

Each room is furnished with a bed, desk, chair, trash can, and either a closet or armoire depending on your room type. Bathroom tissue and trash bags are provided. Each linen kit contains 1 Twin XL fitted sheet, 1 blanket, 1 hand towel, 1 bath towel, 1 wash cloth, and 1 pillow case. All linen is individually sealed and delivered to your room before you arrive. Additional linen items may be ordered for an extra cost.

  • Bath towel set (1 bath, 1 hand, 1 wash): $4.25
  • Bathmat: $2.50
  • Extra pillowcase: $0.50

Off-Campus Housing

BLU-Tique

The CCHP has reserved a block of rooms at the BLU-Tique, located at 1 South Main Street, Akron, Ohio 44311. Rooms are available beginning Wednesday, June 12 through Sunday, June 18, 2024. 

The group rate for a King room is $115 per night (taxes and fees not included). 

The BLU-Tique is a 12-minute walk from conference facilities at the CCHP. The walk takes you along a sidewalk with a slight uphill. It is a 3-minute drive. 

The deadline for making a reservation at the conference rate is May 25, 2024. Group rate link available through the conference registration form. 

Courtyard Marriott Akron Downtown

The CCHP has reserved a block of rooms at the Courtyard Marriott Akron Downtown, located at 41 Furnace Street, Akron, Ohio 44308. Rooms are available beginning Wednesday, June 12 through Sunday, June 18, 2024. 

The group rate for 1 King bed or 2 Queen bed rooms is $189 per night (taxes and fees not included). 

The Courtyard Marriott Akron Downtown is a 20-minute walk from conference facilities at the CCHP. The walk takes you along a series of sidewalks with a slight uphill. It is a 4-minute drive.

Conference Location

All conference programming will be held on-site at the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology (73 S. College Street). All meeting rooms are accessible by elevator and feature built-in audiovisual resources.  

Campus Amenities

Parking

On-campus parking permits will be available for $10 / day. They will be available to purchase in advance with your registration. 

Recreation Pass

The University of Akron’s Recreation and Wellness Center is available to all registrants at a discounted rate of $5 / day. A pass will be available to purchase in advance with your registration. Check website for hours and details. 

Dining

Breakfast and Lunch

Buffet-style breakfast and lunch will be served at Robertson’s Dining Hall, centrally located near the residence hall and within a short walking distance from the conference site. You can choose to purchase breakfast and lunch with your registration. N.B.: On-campus dining is otherwise limited during summer months.

Breakfast: $8.50 / day

Lunch: $10.50 / day

Conference Events
